Go Green or Go Home!

Honestly Ontario Wins!

After being in British Columbia for 5 months now and not having to pay for plastic bags at grocery stores and not having to sort my leftovers into separate bins has been quite the change. I seriously thought BC would be more Eco friendly. It really isn't and I challenge everyone in this whole province to step their game up!

Starting with your closets!

On November 20-21, the Ethical Fashion Forum organized the very first Global Sourcing Marketplace. The event was the first of its kind and brought together over thirty ethical/eco suppliers and 200 visitors from all over the world. It is often difficult for designers and fashion brands to ensure they have an ethical supply chain. This event, following the Spotlight on Sourcing Seminars, showed a glimpse of what can be achieved in the future of fashion production.Next to young designers and established ethical brands such as “Frank & Faith”, “Ascension” and “Luflux”, the high street was present. There were representatives from a range of big retailers including representatives from Marks & Spenser, Topshop, and Ted Baker.

Its great that even the high street shops are realizing that us as consumers are starting to become more conscious of the products we buy.

5 Simple ways we can Save Money & Our Planet.

1. Look for ways you can reduce energy use, including driving less, flying less, turning off the lights, buying local seasonal food, wearing a sweater instead of turning up the heat, using a clothesline instead of dryer, vacationing closer to home, buying used or borrowing things before buying new, and recycling.

2. Nurture a zero-waste culture in your home, school, workplace, church, and community. Use both sides of the paper, bring your own mugs and shopping bags, refill rather than replace printer cartridges, compost food scraps, avoiding bottled water and other overpackaged products, upgrade your PC instead of buying a new one, repair and mend instead of replacing.

3. Detox your body, home, and economy by eliminating products that contain unnecessary toxic chemical additives. Do some research online at sites such as Cosmetics Database.

4. Unplug the television and the Internet, and get involved with your community.

5. Park your car and walk.

Rain Rain Go Away

It has rained in Vancouver for 2 weeks straight now. I seriously forget what blue sky looks like and Im desperately missing the way the warm sun feels on my face. I go to school and its dark, I come home from work and its still dark.

On the bright-side people in Vancouver know how to combat this miserable weather. Everyone on the street is decked out head to toe in fashionable rain gear. Ranging from super cute umbrella's in hundreds of different print and colour combinations, Northface gore- tex jackets and Hunter rubber boots. Yes Toronto readers, rubber boots is a fashion statement on the west coast, my grandmother is rolling over in her grave right about now just knowing that her old squid jigging wellingtons is Haute Couture in Vancouver. Sad thing is they are growing on me not just because my feet are constantly soaking with out them but because of the range of colours these bad boys come in. Check them out at www.hunter-boots.com.

UPDATE: I bought a pair. After seeing a really cute wedding photo-shoot while walking Riley through Stanley Park. The bride and her whole wedding party where jumping in puddles and I looked down at my good ol' keep your feet warm in Ontario UGG boots soaking wet and falling apart due to the rain. I headed to the closest Stoneridge and picked up a pair.Im Happy to say my feet are dry and Im starting to enjoy this endless rain a little more.

First Day Of School!

Quick Update: LOVE IT!

My classes are amazing! Who would of thought I could go to school and spend time reading blogs shopping online and watching fashion shows in class and the teachers actually mark you on it? This is the kind of stuff I got in trouble doing in high school.

& its so nice to be in a class full of like minded individuals. I think we all spend the first 15 minutes of each class admiring everything everyone is wearing. Ya You In the Front Row LOVE your shoes.

The teachers are great! They all have so many great stories to tell and have great advice. For the first time in years I am excited to wake up and go to school.

Being in a new city I think is helping me open up and figure out who I am, where Im going and what I want to do. Its nice to be a tourist in the city your living in. I've been here for 3 months now and I still get excited when I see the mountains through the busy city streets.

Sorry its been Forever Since I have posted anything. I will try and set aside some time at least once a week to update you on the going on's in my life.

Blanche Macdonald

List 3 designers that you admire most and why.

Tom Ford

Tom Ford to me is a perfect example of how hard work and perseverance pays off. He started out working for Cathy Hardwick in California but he felt he wasn't fulfilling his potential by staying in the United States he felt constricted just like how i feel by staying in Toronto and also needing a drastic change. He moved to Italy and rapidly worked his way to becoming the creative director for Gucci which at the time was no longer a top selling brand. Within 4 years of hard work Tom Ford transformed the Gucci image to what it is today and increased sales by 90%. Tom Ford pushed the envelope not just in fashion but also in Marketing through racy advertising campaigns for both Gucci and Yves Saint- Laurent. He transformed the Gucci brand into a mainstream publicly attainable and wearable clothing line while still remaining true to the original Gucci house roots. I think to be able to do everything that tom ford has is such a great feat in the fashion industry and that he has set many examples for future generations of how to help a brand grow to its fullest potential.
Ann Demeulemeester
I’ve chosen Ann Demeulemeester as Inspiration not just for myself she is also an inspiration for many other designers as well. First off there is absolutely nothing from any of her collections I wouldn’t wear myself. Her line is bold and feminine and stands out from the rest she isn’t scared to go the complete other direction then the rest of the fashion world. I first fell in love with her line just through her clothing I always love to learn more about a designer. I have read quite a few of her interviews and to my she comes across as a strong willed down to earth powerful woman who is constantly thinking about the next best thing. I guess in a way she reminds me a lot of my mother. I stumbled upon a quote of hers and it constantly reminds me to stick to what i believe in and never give up.
"When I believe in something I will never drop it. I will be mad about it, I will be sick about it, everyone will throw the patterns at my head! But I will not stop. I think there's always a solution. When I was at school I had a teacher who said "'not possible' is not possible." You only have to want something hard enough, then it becomes possible." (http://www.lumiere.com/fashion/97/01/ann/05.html)
She works hard and never half heartily designs a piece there is always so much care even in the tiniest of details her piece are not just to wear they are conversation pieces everyone experiences something different. To me it’s no different than standing in an art gallery with 20 different people and everyone walks away with a different emotion to what they just viewed.
Coco Chanel
The designer I admire most, for not only her strength and independence, but also her revolution for women’s clothing. Coco Chanel, a woman that changed the look of her time, is not only innovative, but creative as well. From her start with the not-so-contemporary little black dress, to her perfume No. 9, she inspired me, among other designers, to become interested in fashion myself.

With her debut, the little black dress, many thought of her design as revealing and inappropriate. However in reality, she did what every designer tries to do, change the fashion industry to satisfy the fashion of tomorrow. Coco Chanel was indeed innovative and did not let anyone tell her otherwise. She indeed revolutionized women's fashion whether the men of that time liked it or not.

She was also strong and independent, something I am still trying so hard to be, so naturally, as a person also going into such a competitive industry, I look up to her. So when I see what she could do, I want to believe that I can too. Something I suppose most female designers want in their lives.
